Chief of the Air Staff Air Chief Marshal BS 'Tony' Dhanoa flew solo in a MiG-21 Type 96 aircraft from the Sulur airbase on May 17.

"The MiG-21 is a formidable war machine," the IAF chief said after the sortie. Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa has flown over 2,000 hours on MiG-21s. He also commanded a MiG-21 during the Kargil War in 1999.

The Air Chief's sortie was also seen as "homage" to this iconic Soviet-era fighter after the shooting down of a Pakistan Air Force F-16 'Falcon' by MiG-21 pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman over the Rajouri sector on February 26.

The IAF Tweeted about Chief Dhanoa's sortie with the hashtag 'LeadingFromFront'

This is the second time that he has flown a MiG-21 during his tenure as the Chief of Air Staff.
