The first inaugural flight AI-021, Sector: Kolkata-Delhi-London was successfully operated on January 23, on the 116th birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose at 1000Hrs from New Integrated Terminal Building of NSCBI Airport, Kolkata. There were 115 passengers on board out of which 65 pax were for International destination.
All the facilities of the New Integrated Terminal such as, Check-in, BHS, CUTE, Customs, Immigration, Security check, Boarding Gate and other necessary facilities were successfully operated. The boarding gate No.12 was used with P.B.B. and VDGS facilities.
Airports Authority of India greeted the departing passengers at the entrance of the terminal with other airport stake holders such as airlines, immigration, customs, CISF, DGCA, BCAS, etc. joined hands in greeting the passengers of the first flight.
The design of the New Integrated Terminal was selected through global design competition to achieve international level of excellence with emphasis on operational synergy and optimum utilisation of available resources. AAI had appointed Sikka & Associates along with RMJM of Hong Kong and VirenderKhanna and Associates along with ADPi France to provide Architectural and Engineering Consultancy Services. A column free structure, maintenance free finishes and stylist ceiling symbolic of regional flavour are the main features of the design. This modern structure, in glass and steel, has been constructed on ‘Green Building concept’ using environment-friendly technology with world class passenger amenities. The construction of the new Integrated Terminal Building and other related works was entrusted to ITD-ITD CEM JV. AAI also appointed Parson Brinckerhoff Int’l Inc. as the Project Management Consultants to supervise and monitor the construction of state-of-art terminal building.
Kolkata Airport is one of the busiest airports in the country and at present handles over nine million passengers annually. With the commissioning of the new building its passengers handling capacity will be enhanced to 20 million passengers annually.
The glass and steel structure, spread over 1,89,815 square meters has been built at a cost of 2,325 crore. The new terminal is a five-tier building with the bottom floor being the arrivals and upper arrival area and the top floor being a departures and upper departure area with a dedicated basement for MEP services (Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing services). The roof of the building is designed to harvest rainwater both for landscaping and washrooms purposes. AAI has installed a colossal 18 ft high bronze statue of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose in whose honour this airport is named.
The terminal will have a wide Apron, for parking of aircraft on both northern and north-eastern sides of the new facility,eighteen aircraft can be parked in an in-contact configuration format. These stands will supplement to other 53 remote aircraft parking bays. Passengers will be able to embark /disembark from any aircraft stand and be able to proceed to either domestic or international side.
